What is Buttock Enhancement?

Buttock augmentation, also known as gluteal augmentation, is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the contour, size, and shape of the buttocks. This can be achieved through methods like fat transfer, buttock implants, or lifting techniques. Fat transfer, often called a Brazilian butt lift, involves moving fat from other body parts to the buttocks to add volume and smooth the skin. Alternatively, silicone-filled implants can be surgically placed within the buttock tissues to increase size and improve shape. Buttock augmentation can also lift sagging skin, creating a more youthful and rounded appearance. While these procedures are effective, they come with risks and a recovery period that can last several months. Because gluteal augmentation is technically demanding, it’s essential to choose a surgeon with extensive training and a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the gluteal region.

Buttock augmentation with implants

Buttock augmentation with implants involves inserting silicone implants into the gluteal region to enhance the buttocks’ shape and volume. Two primary approaches exist for implant placement: subfascial and intramuscular.

In the subfascial technique, the implant is placed beneath the fascia of the gluteus muscle. This method avoids muscle dissection and reduces the risk of sciatic nerve injury, which could lead to neuropathic pain and muscle dysfunction in the lower leg. However, the implant may appear more prominent since the subfascial plane offers less depth.

The intramuscular approach places the implant within the gluteus maximus muscle, providing a thicker muscular covering for a more natural contour. While this technique offers better aesthetic outcomes, it requires the surgeon to bisect the muscle, which can prolong recovery and increase the risk of nerve damage. Such damage could potentially cause paralysis or muscle atrophy, leading to asymmetry and dysfunction.

Silicone implants

Silicone implants come in various shapes and sizes, typically ranging from 200 to 500 mL. The ideal implant size and shape depend on your body’s anatomy and desired augmentation level. This procedure usually requires general anesthesia and takes several hours to complete. The surgeon will make an incision between the butt cheeks, either at the top or bottom, and then insert the implants into the chosen plane. After placing the implants, the surgeon closes the incision with stitches or surgical tape.

Butt implants are particularly suitable for individuals in good health, who don’t have enough fat for a Brazilian butt lift (BBL), and who are seeking a rounder, shapelier buttock appearance. While relatively safe, this procedure carries risks like any surgery, including potential nerve damage, implant displacement, and incision healing issues.

A Better Alternative Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)

A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is a cosmetic surgery that enhances the size and shape of your buttocks by transferring fat from other areas of your body. This procedure creates a fuller, rounder buttock contour. The result is often more hourglass-shaped figure with a smaller-looking waist.

A BBL, or also augmentation with fat grafting, can significantly improve the proportions of your lower body. It enhance the buttocks while reducing fat in common problem areas.

Candidates for a BBL should be in good physical health. It’s important to have realistic expectations, and have enough excess body fat to transfer. If a candidate lacks the necessary fat, they might consider butt implants instead.

A Brazilian butt lift offers a long-lasting enhancement to your body’s shape. Results will maintain with proper care and weight management.

BBL Procedure

The procedure involves two steps: first, fat is removed from selected areas using liposuction. Then, the extracted fat is purified and strategically injected into the buttocks. The results of a BBL are semi-permanent. They can last for many years, even more than a decade  if you maintain a stable weight.

Possible Risks or Complications

Butt implant surgery, while highly effective, comes with a significant risk of complications. Working with an experienced plastic surgeon can help reduce these risks, but the procedure still tends to have a higher complication rate compared to other cosmetic surgeries. Some common risks include excessive bleeding, chronic pain, fluid buildup under the skin (seroma), and blood accumulation (hematoma). Infections are also a concern, potentially leading to permanent scarring, skin discoloration, and uneven results.

The implants can shift, become malpositioned, or even rupture, resulting in an asymmetrical appearance that may require additional surgery. There is also the possibility of numbness, changes in skin sensation, or permanent tightening of muscles and tissues around the implant (contracture). Poor wound healing, unfavorable scarring, and skin loss are other serious risks associated with this procedure. Anesthesia presents its own set of risks, including deep vein thrombosis and cardiac or pulmonary complications.

Despite these risks, the surgery boasts a high satisfaction rate of 96%, but it’s crucial to weigh the potential benefits against the risks.

Recovery from Butt Implant surgey

Recovery from butt implant surgery requires patience and adherence to post-operative instructions. Initially, you may need to avoid sitting or sleeping on your back for at least two to three weeks, except when eating or using the toilet. After this period, you’ll need to use a pillow beneath your hamstrings for support for at least eight weeks. It’s important to follow these instructions closely to minimize complications. Moderate pain is typical during recovery, but it can be effectively managed with medications.

Most patients can return to work within two to four weeks, depending on their comfort level and ability to follow sitting restrictions. However, strenuous activity should be avoided for at least four weeks. Most patients resume their normal level of activity at six to eight weeks. Final results from the surgery typically become apparent around three to six months after the procedure, once the swelling has fully subsided.

If you experience any severe symptoms, such as an allergic reaction, excessive bleeding or swelling, fever, or extreme pain that doesn’t subside, it’s important to contact your plastic surgeon immediately.
