What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, technically lipoplasty,, is a cosmetic surgery that removes stubborn fat from specific body areas. Commonly targeted areas include the abdomen, hips and under the chin. The procedure involves inserting a thin tube, a cannula, under the skin, which suctions out the fat. While liposuction enhances body contours, it’s not a weight loss method.  You should only consider it when diet and exercise fail to remove fat in certain areas. Liposuction can also be combined with other surgeries like facelifts, breast reductions, or tummy tucks.

A good candidate is an adult within 30% of their ideal weight, possessing firm, elastic skin. You should consider liposuction if you have stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise. It’s important to be in good health, free from conditions like heart disease or diabetes, and to avoid smoking.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure, which means you’ll be able to go home on the same day as your surgery. Typically, it is performed using General anesthesia or Local anesthesia with IV sedation. Optional Pain Relief can help you to manage anxiety or discomfort during the surgery. After making the incisions, the surgeon inserts a thin cannula to agitate and loosen fatty tissues. The surgeon then suctions out and removes the excess fat from the body. Finally, they carefully seal the incisions to promote proper healing. The procedure takes about two hours. Most patients resume normal activities within 1-2 days, depending on recovery.

Risks & Complications

Although it is a minimally invasive procedure, Liposuction comes with some risks. Bruising and contour deformities are the most common complications, often resulting from uneven fat removal. Rare but serious risks include fat emboli, where fat globules block blood flow to tissue, leading to symptoms like shortness of breath and dyspnea. Blood clots can form, particularly when large areas are treated, increasing the risk of pulmonary embolism, which presents with dyspnea and tachycardia. Infection in fatty tissues is another serious complication that may require hospitalization, antibiotics, and additional surgery. Fluid overload can also occur as a result of the procedure. Nerve damage is possible during the procedure, and there’s a risk of lidocaine toxicity if the lidocaine content in the solution is too high. The risk of complications generally increases when larger areas are treated, emphasizing the importance of careful consideration and consultation with a qualified surgeon before undergoing liposuction.

Recovery from Lipo

Full recovery from liposuction can take up to six months, but this varies for each person. Initially, you can expect to rest completely for the first few days, during which moderate pain is common. Pain and soreness typically decrease significantly within one or two weeks. Swelling often begins to subside within the first week but may take several months to fully disappear. Most people can return to work within two to six weeks, although those with physically demanding jobs may require more time off. While you may have small scars from the incisions, they are usually placed in inconspicuous areas and should be barely noticeable. Regular check-ups with your surgeon will ensure you are healing properly, and if you notice excessive bleeding or swelling, it’s crucial to contact your physician immediately, as these could be signs of infection.
